FLORAHOLLAND, 15 October 2010 (press release) - Rose buyers at FloraHolland have selected the ‘Miss Piggy+' as FleurPrimeur Rose of 2010. Arnold Hordijk, commercial director at FloraHolland, unveiled this FleurPrimeur Rose at the FloraHolland stand at the Horti Fair. The rose was described as ’eye catching, innovative, long-lasting and with a pleasant scent’. The ‘Miss Piggy+’ cultivar was previously nominated for the 2010 Glazen Tulp. ‘Miss Piggy’ was bred by Lex+ the Rose Factory and supplied by Lex+ and De Singel. A visibly happy Puk van den Bulk from De Singel and Cor den Hartog from Lex+ accepted the title.
The honorable runner-up spot went to the winner of the 2010 Glazen Tulp 2010, the pink ‘Deep Water’ from the breeder Rosen Tantau, supplied by Zuurbier & Co and Sjaak van der Hulst. Buyers value this cultivar for its special color patterns, character, commercial suitability, good shelf life and innovative color.
A good shelf life, a nice big flower, a dazzling shade of white and an unusual scent are some of the valued characteristics of ‘White Naomi’. Because of these characteristics, buyers nominated this rose as the third FleurPrimeur Rose of 2010. ‘White Naomi’, bred by Schreurs, is supplied to FloraHolland every day by Roseworld and Mermin roses.
FleurPrimeurs of previous years: the Honour-FleurPrimeur
In addition to the FleurPrimeur Roses of 2010, a number of very successful FleurPrimeur cultivars from previous years were also spotlighted.
Arnold Hordijk presented a special prize for the pink polyanthus rose ‘Mimi Eden’. This cultivar was the 2002 FleurPrimeur Rose because of its color combination and lavishly-filled flowers. For years, ‘Mimi Eden’ has been one of the most important of the polyanthus roses. In addition, according to Hordijk, it also caused a shift in assortment, and boosted the popularity of lavishly-filled polyanthus roses.
The ‘Mimi Eden’ was crowned with the title ‘Honour-FleurPrimeur 2001-2010’
Lex+ is most successful breeder over 2001-2010
Breeders were also put in the spotlight. After all, they are the driving force behind innovations. Arnold Hordijk nominated several breeders who have regularly appeared among the nominated products over the past decade and the award winners of the FleurPrimeur Rose title.
The most nominated and winning cultivars were bred by Lex+ the Rose Factory. With seven nominations, and five first prizes, this breeder stands out because of innovation and quality, the characteristics of FleurPrimeur.
‘Prima Donna+’, ‘Talea+’, ‘Sweet Avalanche+’, ‘Avalanche+ Peach’ and, this year, ‘Miss Piggy+’ have all won the FleurPrimeur Rose of the Year title. Arnold Hordijk presented Lex Voorn and Cor den Hartog with a unique framed collection of certificates from the winning cultivars of recent years.
Glazen Tulp awards
This was the final FleurPrimeur Rose award during the Horti Fair. Rose buyers can still vote for their favorite cultivars in 2011, but these nominations will take part in the Glazen Tulp competition. Roses come under the category of cut flowers, alongside the categories of garden plants, houseplants and concepts. The Glazen Tulp is the floriculture sector’s most prestigious award, given each year by FloraHolland for the best market introduction of the year.
