To facilitate smooth, transparent trade in floricultural products along various parts of the chain, clarity is a minimum basic requirement. This clarity is achieved through classifying floricultural products based on several important characteristics. Quality, (size) grading, maturity, packaging, pre-processing and packing are key examples. The VBN, together with involved parties, has set a number of general specifications for all product groups. On the VBN website one may find more detailed product specifications. These requirements not only ensure clarity in commercial dealings but also quality assurance.
Supplemental requirements
Parties may impose supplemental requirements on part of the chain (mediation, retail), for instance regarding plant thickness or maturity. The VBN has listed these supplemental requirements in the VBN purchasing specifications guide. These requirements apply to cut flowers, potted plants and garden plants alike.
Suppliers – information codes
Suppliers may also add sales-enhancing supplemental information to their product by using an information code. This code is not displayed on the clock face, but may be announced during the auction process. The entered code must not violate the supply requirements. Further information is available from the Quality Control Service.
